Preventing Threatened or Recurrent Miscarriage with
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
It is thought that one in three pregnancies miscarries; some women do not even
realize
they are pregnant. The causes of miscarriage include nutritional deficiencies,
hormonal
imbalance, infection, anatomical problems of the uterus and cervix, exposure to
harmful
substances, maternal age and autoimmune or chromosomal fetal disorders.
Most miscarriages occur during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. Main symptoms of
a
threatened miscarriage are backache, abdominal cramping, and pain resembling
period pains, spotting or bleeding.

Like its western medicine counterpart, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)
categorizes
the causes of miscarriage in several ways. It views a decline in vital energies
as a
significant contributing factor to miscarriage. Western medicine points to
genetic
abnormalities as the leading cause of miscarriage. In TCM, the Kidney Essence
(Jing),
Yin, Yang, and Qi provide direction, energy and substance to the reproductive
system.
The quality and balance of these energies determine egg health in the female and
sperm
health in the male. Naturally, these energies decline with age, but they can be
further
damaged by poor care, overworking, poor diet, drug/alcohol abuse, excessive
stress, and/
or age. It is also possible a deficiency can be inherited at birth, as evidenced
by congenital
anatomic issues such as an abnormally shaped uterus or a shortened cervical
canal.
Vitro Fertilization
Patients
Once the embryo has been fertilized and implanted into the uterus, it is
extremely important
to prevent miscarriage with
Vitro Fertilization
patients. Female patients around 40 years
old experience a miscarriage rate of nearly 50% with IVF alone. However, with
the help of
Chinese medicine, the rate of miscarriage can significantly be reduced and the
pregnancy
can be supported to reach full term.
Research Into Recurrent Miscarriage
& Chinese Herbal Medicine
Shanghai Gynaecology & Obstetrics Department of Shanghai
Medical University.
In 40 women with threatened abortion and a history of
miscarriage, blood test showed
threatened abortion (TA), compared to the blood test of
normal pregnant women (The
plasma beta-EP level in TA was significantly higher than
that in normal pregnant women,
P < 0.01. On the contrary, plasma GnRH, HCG and P4 were
obviously lower in TA as
compared with those of the normal cases, P < 0.01.)
After treatment with Chinese herbal medicine that
supported reproduction and blood
circulation and protected the fetus, 36 of the 40
patients continued their pregnancy without
symptoms of TA, and the above-mentioned four criteria
measured at 10-12th week of
gestation were similar to those of normal cases, P >
0.05. The authors concluded that
Chinese herbal Medicine can regulate plasma beta-EP and
placental endocrine function
in threatened abortion in women with a history of
recurrent miscarriage.
